Timer Technique for Procrastinators

Hey procrastinators, this post is for you.


You know who you are. You're the student who doesn't know where to start when working your college application so you put it off for later. You're overwhelmed by so much work all at once, and instead of just diving into your work, you find other things to do. You scroll through your social media, play video games or hang out with friends only to sacrifice precious work time.


No more procrastinating for you because CROSSWALK has a tried and true technique we use with many of our students who struggle to start their work.


It's called the "Timer Technique" and it goes like this: When you are overwhelmed with a task, like writing a college essay, set a time for 30 minutes. During the 30 minutes, get started on the task. Work diligently for 30 minutes and try and get as much as you can done. You might just write a sentence, but get something down.


After 30 minutes, if you need to, take a break. During your break, step outside, move your body, get a snack, drink some water or otherwise let your brain rest. If you don't need the break, then set the timer again for 30 minutes and repeat.


It's a pretty simple technique, right?


But very effective.


Most students find that 30 minutes of work is not as daunting as an entire college application. And many students, once they get going for 30 minutes, find they can keep working for longer stretches of time. After 1-2 hours, a lot gets done!


Try the "Timer Technique" for college applications, essays, homework, projects and more. Also, find the right timing that works for you. Some students can only focus for 15 or 20 minutes. Some can lock in for 45 or even 60 minutes.


Just be sure you set a reasonable timeframe for you so you can get your work done on time.
